I don't know whether I hadn't taken notice earlier, or it's just later in life for them later in the summer. I assumed the slipperiness was about frustrating the predatory birds, but maybe it's about not having your shell wear away to nothing as you spend your life plowing through sand. I've also been picking them up to see whether they're all right-handed. So far.
